چکیده

Introduction Minoxidil is a powerful vasodilator hypotensive drug which has been used extensively to control blood pressure in patients with renal failure. Pericardial effusions are associated with minoxidil therapy (Marquez-Julio and Uldall, 1977). In cases where the protein content of the effusion has been examined in patients-some on dialysis-(Martin, Spodick and Zins, 1980; Houston, McChesney and Chatterjee, 1981) it has usually been in excess of 3 g/dl although the effusion has often been attributed to the haemodynamic effect of the drug and its tendency to cause fluid retention. The patient reported here developed a pericardial effusion with a high protein content and also pleural effusions. It is suggested that mechanisms other than fluid overload and uraemia may have a role in minoxidil related effusions.

Sir, We report a case of a 48-year-old male with end-stage renal disease secondary to focal segmental glomerular sclerosis, who began continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (PD) in June 2002. Three months later, minoxidil 5mg/day was introduced because of uncontrolled hypertension. Oedema and weight gain appeared in spite of 3 l/day net ultrafiltration on PD. Left pleural effusion associated...

Long-term Treatment of Severe Hypertension with Minoxidil, Propranolol and Furosemide

Thirteen patients with severe hypertension were treated with combined minoxidil, propranolol, and furosemide (mean daily doses 33 mg, 475 mg, and 578 mg, respectively) for nine to twenty-five months (mean 13.8). Average mean blood pressure while on aggressive therapy with conventional medication was 144 ± 14 mm Hg; on minoxidil and propranolol it was 108 10 mm Hg (P < 2.5 X 10-6, paired t-test)...
